ABS Meeting: Oct 26, 2020 – Sequins and Beads- How Belly Dance Costumes Are Embellished –

  • 6:00-6:30pm Via ZOOM! Meet and Greet-Socializing
  • 6:30-8:30pm  Via ZOOM! Instructor: Lori Bier

Our October project is “Sequins and Beads- How Belly Dance Costumes Are Embellished”

Take a close-up look at the sparkles and shine on belly dance costumes and learn what materials and techniques are used to make them glitter. We’ll see a few different styles and talk about what goes into them.

We’ll learn a commonly used, easy to execute stitch for attaching beads and sequins to felt and use it to embellish a small sampler.  This sampler can be used as a brooch or a hanging felt decoration.  Here’s an example:

Items needed to complete the project:

Materials:

  • Felt backing material – Any type of non-fraying material you can stick a bead needle through is good.  Thick wool felt is best.
  • Sequins  –  Round with the hole in the middle.  The faceted sequins are needed for the dimensional work but flats work OK too.
  • Seed beads
  • Bugle beads (optional)

Tools:

  • Beading needle
  • Beading thread
  • Scissors
  • brooch pin back (optional)

If you don’t have these materials, Lori is willing to mail a kit to you at no cost.  Just email austinbeadsociety@gmail.com with your name and full street address before Friday, Oct 16.

-We will be sending out an email before the 26th to current members with instructions on how to join the Zoom meeting.
